Early Exit for McMillan
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Jalen McMillan has been ruled out of the game against the Minnesota Vikings after suffering a knee injury in the first quarter.
The problem brings immediate worry for Tampa Bay because it involves the exact same knee that McMillan injured during training camp. That previous problem kept him on the sidelines for multiple weeks and forced him to miss the season opener entirely.
The Moment of the Collision
The injury happened on a passing play during the opening quarter of the match. McMillan was attempting to catch a pass on a corner route when he collided with Vikings safety Josh Metellus.
At this point, it is not completely clear how the damage occurred. McMillan might have suffered the injury while pivoting his body to make the play, or the issue may have happened on direct contact with Metellus. McMillan was able to limp off the field under his own power, but the team quickly determined that he could not return to the game.
Disruption to Tampa Bay Plans
Losing McMillan is a tough development for the Buccaneers offense. He made his return to game action last week, though he played only in a limited capacity as he worked his way back from the earlier knee problem.
Heading into this week, McMillan was expected to step up and handle a significantly bigger role for the offense. Tampa Bay needed every option available as they try to climb out of an early 0-2 hole.
Buccaneers Facing Tough Situation
This is the first time since 2014 that Tampa Bay has started a campaign with two straight defeats. The team entered this matchup fighting hard to avoid falling deeper into trouble early in the year.
Having McMillan ruled out so early in the first quarter against Minnesota leaves Tampa Bay shorthanded in the passing attack once again. The coaching staff will now have to adjust their plans without the wide receiver on the field.
