Rays Save Season In Extra Innings
The Tampa Bay Rays kept their World Series hopes alive on Tuesday night with a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Tropicana Field. Milwaukee was one win away from completing a sweep and claiming their first title in 57 years, but Tampa Bay pulled off a late comeback in the 12th inning to force Game 5.
The game lasted four hours and 20 minutes. Tampa Bay struggled in the first three games of the series, but they found a way to win when their season was on the line. Yandy Diaz summed up the mood after the win, saying, "We have tomorrow. We have a new day. We have life."
Late Drama In The Twelfth
The contest remained tight through 11 innings before Milwaukee looked ready to secure the championship in the 12th. Cooper Pratt, a 22 year old rookie, hit a home run into the left field stands on the first pitch he faced from Ian Seymour. It was his fourth hit of the night.
Pratt thought he had sealed the title for his team. "I hit the thing and I was like, oh my gosh. That's gone," Pratt said after the game. His home run put the Brewers just three outs away from history.
Tampa Bay Fights Back To Win
Tampa Bay responded immediately in the bottom of the 12th inning. Junior Caminero reached base after an error by Milwaukee third baseman Joey Ortiz. Catcher Liam Hicks followed with a single to left field, putting runners on first and third.
Jonny DeLuca then hit a pitch from Shane Drohan up the middle to tie the score. After Chandler Simpson loaded the bases with a single, pinch hitter Ben Williamson stepped up. Williamson hit the very first pitch he saw to deliver the winning run.
Series Moves To Game Five
The victory means the World Series will continue for at least one more day. The loss was a painful blow for Milwaukee, who thought they were minutes away from celebrating their first championship.
Pratt admitted that sleep would not come easy after letting the win slip away. "It was hard to sleep last night," Pratt said. "It's probably going to be a little harder tonight." Both teams will now prepare for Game 5 as Tampa Bay attempts to keep their comeback going.
