Tampa Bay Rays Secure Division Title With Dominant Win Over Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays are the American League East champions once again. They secured their fifth division title on Tuesday with a convincing 6-1 victory over the New York Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader.

This win gives the Rays home field advantage throughout the American League playoffs. It is their first division crown since 2021. The team has led the division since late June and spent 128 days in first place.

Rasmussen Dominates on the Mound

Drew Rasmussen was the star of the night for the Rays. The pitcher took a no hit bid into the seventh inning before Heliot Ramos hit a double to break it up. Rasmussen finished the game with 11 strikeouts and allowed just one hit.

Yandy Diaz also played a massive role in the victory. He hit a two run single in the seventh inning and added another two run single in the ninth. Diaz now has 175 hits this season, which leads the American League.

The Yankees struggled to find their rhythm in the second game. They were missing key slugger Aaron Judge, who has been sidelined with a fractured right rib and a sore right calf.

How the Doubleheader Played Out

The Yankees had actually delayed the Rays celebration earlier in the day. New York won the first game of the doubleheader 2-0 behind a strong performance from pitcher Carlos Rodon.

However, the Rays bounced back in the second game. A bunt single by Taylor Walls in the seventh inning set up the scoring run against Yankees pitcher Max Fried. The Rays then added three runs in that inning to take control of the match and ultimately seal their division victory.
