Tseng Enters MLB Posting System
Taiwanese reliever Jyun-Yue Tseng is officially moving closer to a transfer to Major League Baseball. The 25 year old right hander from the Fubon Guardians will enter the posting system this weekend. Major League teams will have the chance to sign him starting Sunday until Dec. 22.
Strong Form in Taiwan and International Play
Tseng comes into the market after a strong season in the Chinese Professional Baseball League. He finished with a 5-3 record and grabbed 25 saves across 48 appearances this year. Over 52 1/3 innings, he struck out 65 batters while allowing only 13 walks.
He also impressed international fans during his second World Baseball Classic appearance this year. Tseng pitched hitless innings against both South Korea and the Czech Republic, picking up one save. In the game against South Korea, his four seam fastball averaged 93.7 mph, and he mixed in effective cutters. His baseball background includes playing in the 2014 Little League World Series and winning the CPBL Rookie of the Year award in 2021.
Posting Fees and Potential Delay
Under the official agreement between MLB and the CPBL, any team signing Tseng will pay a posting fee to his Taiwanese club. The fee starts at 20% for the first $25 million of a major league contract. It drops to 17.5% for the next $25 million and 15% for any amount beyond $50 million. There is also a 15% supplemental fee on any earned bonuses, salary escalators, or exercised options.
For a minor league contract, the fee is 25% of the signing bonus. It includes a 15% supplemental fee on earnings if he gets added to the 40 man roster.
However, the clock is ticking faster than usual. MLB is expected to lock out the players association when their collective bargaining agreement ends on Dec. 1. That move could cut short the window Tseng has to complete a deal with an American team.
