Offers from top European teams

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has opened up about turning down offers from major European teams during his playing career. The former England captain spent a 19 year playing career at Anfield, playing 710 matches and winning nine trophies before moving to MLS team LA Galaxy in 2015. He eventually retired from football in 2016.

The 46 year old revealed that several foreign clubs showed strong interest in signing him over the years. Much of that interest came through coach Jose Mourinho, who wanted to sign him at Inter Milan and Real Madrid. German giants Bayern Munich also made contact near the end of his Liverpool career when Bastian Schweinsteiger was leaving in 2015.

Why Gerrard stayed at Anfield

Gerrard explained that he was not interested in leaving Liverpool at the time. He was enjoying his football under manager Brendan Rodgers when Bayern Munich made an inquiry with his agent. He described the interest from top European teams as flattering, but stated he was never going to leave the Premier League club.

After ending his playing career, Gerrard turned to coaching. He has been without a club since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq in January 2025. Looking back on his playing days, he admitted that watching current English stars succeed abroad sometimes makes him wonder what might have happened if he had moved.

No regrets despite watching stars abroad

Gerrard specifically pointed to Jude Bellingham playing at Real Madrid and Harry Kane playing at Bayern Munich. He noted that seeing them win loads of trophies with foreign teams makes him retrace his steps and think about his career path.

However, he insisted that he remains completely happy with the decisions he made. Gerrard declared that he has no regrets about spending his best years with Liverpool rather than moving to Spain or Germany.
