Pittsburgh Responds On The Field
The Pittsburgh Steelers got the last laugh on Sunday by beating the Cleveland Browns 27-6. The victory gave Pittsburgh sole possession of first place in the AFC North. It also marked their 23rd straight regular season home win over Cleveland.
Pregame banter dominated headlines leading into the match. Browns defensive end Jared Verse talked plenty before kickoff, but Pittsburgh let their play do the talking. The Steelers offense rushed for 200 yards during the game.
Words Fly Before Kickoff
The tension started a month ago after Cleveland won 27-24 at home against Pittsburgh in Week 4. Verse called Pittsburgh's offensive linemen dirty back then. He added that he could not wait to get his hands on them again.
Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward mentioned on The Rich Eisen Show that Verse's comments would be addressed. Verse responded the next day, stating he was not concerned about Heyward and planned to make Pittsburgh theirs.
On Field Clashes And Penalties
During the game, Verse was often jawing with Pittsburgh offensive players. He also drew an unnecessary roughness penalty on guard Mason McCormick. McCormick swept the legs of a leaping Verse on a point after attempt and slammed him to the ground.
Verse said afterwards that he had no respect for an action like that. McCormick defended his play, stating he had no idea who it was and was just told to get a jumper's hands down.
Final Words From Both Sides
Verse ended the day with one tackle and one quarterback hit. He stood by his words after the loss, saying that as a man, you naturally have to do that.
Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker had a different view. Brisker said Verse should have kept his mouth shut after failing to stand behind his words. However, Heyward insisted that Pittsburgh was not motivated by the trash talk. Heyward said the team simply wanted to win before their bye week because they have bigger fish to fry.
