Big Injury Blow for Steelers Defense
The Pittsburgh Steelers have suffered a significant setback on their defensive line. Defensive tackle Derrick Harmon is expected to miss several weeks of action after sustaining a foot injury during their latest game.
The injury occurred during the first half of Pittsburgh's matchup on Thursday night. The Steelers ended up losing that close contest 27-24 against the Cleveland Browns. Harmon was unable to walk off the field on his own and had to be carted off by the medical staff. After the game, the player was seen wearing a protective walking boot. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI scan on Friday to determine the full extent of the damage to his foot.
Roster Decisions and Harmon's Impact
With Harmon set to spend some time on the sidelines, the Steelers are now looking at their roster options. The team is currently considering whether to place the defensive tackle on injured reserve. Even if they make that move, sources indicate that they do not believe this is a long term injury for the second year star.
Losing Harmon is a tough blow for the Pittsburgh defense. The 23 year old was the team's first round draft selection last year and has quickly become a key player. During his rookie season, he recorded 27 tackles and three sacks.
He has also shown his ability to make big plays in clutch moments. Earlier this season, Harmon secured a game winning strip sack against Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, which secured a Week 3 victory for Pittsburgh. The team will now have to find a way to replace his production on the defensive line while he recovers over the next few weeks.
