Spurs shock Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Roberto De Zerbi guided Tottenham Hotspur to a rare 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge against ten man Chelsea. Spurs had won only one of their previous 33 Premier League visits to the ground, with their previous victory coming back in April 2018.

The match turned in the second half in rain and wind. Spurs took the lead in the 77th minute when Mateus Fernandes sent in a corner. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders, making his first league start with Emiliano Martinez out with a broken jaw, misjudged the ball and punched it into his own net.

Things got worse for Chelsea when Cole Palmer received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Conor Gallagher. Mathys Tel then sealed the win for Spurs with a late 20 yard strike into the bottom corner.

Chelsea pay for poor discipline and missing key players

Xabi Alonso suffered his first home defeat as Chelsea manager. The team missed top scorer Joao Pedro, who was out due to an injury sustained in Friday training. Without him, Chelsea lacked fluidity in attack, leaving Danny Welbeck on the bench while Rogers led the front line.

Chelsea also struggled with composure. Palmer was booked twice in ten minutes, first for shoving Fernandes in frustration and then for his late tackle on Gallagher. That red card brought back memories of last season, when Chelsea received 11 red cards across all competitions.

For Spurs, Fernandes impressed with 121 touches and five tackles. However, James Maddison was forced off early in the second half in his second game back from ACL surgery. Tottenham moved up to 12th in the table while Chelsea remain in fourth place.
