Support for the new manager
Tottenham Hotspur chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has backed Roberto De Zerbi despite a difficult start to the season. Spurs sit bottom of the Premier League and remain winless after five matches.
The slow start follows a summer window where the club committed over £380 million on ten new signings, including Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Sávio. Speaking to supporters at a Fan Advisory Board meeting, Venkatesham acknowledged the frustration caused by the poor points tally. However, he stated he was encouraged by aspects of the underlying performances since an opening day loss at Brentford, pointing to chances created in games against Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and Everton.
Squad rebuild and financial balance
The club went through massive changes on and off the pitch. Spurs generated roughly £150 million in player sales, including selling Luka Vuskovic to Brighton for £50 million. Experienced names like Guglielmo Vicario, Djed Spence, Cristian Romero, Kevin Danso, and João Palhinha also departed. More money could arrive next summer through obligations to buy Radu Dragusin and Danso, alongside options on Vicario and Pape Sarr.
Venkatesham explained that spending rules remain a real constraint. Tottenham have not turned a profit since 2019, affected by consecutive 17th place finishes and no European revenue, even with a £120 million cash injection from the Lewis family last month. Spurs also made changes to their medical and physical performance staff to address injuries, with Jan Paul van Hecke recently returning from international duty with a foot injury.
