No Surgery Needed for Ohtani
Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani will not need surgery on his left knee, right arm, or any other issue from the second half of the season. Doctors prescribed rest instead. The team expects him to be ready as a two-way player when preparations begin for the upcoming campaign.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman confirmed the news during a press conference at Dodger Stadium. Friedman stated that he fully expects Ohtani to pitch next year. The exact plan for his pitching workload is still under review by the club.
Late Season Struggles
Physical discomfort affected Ohtani's performance as the season wore on. He struggled in the batter's box during the final weeks of the regular season and into the playoffs. The Dodgers were ultimately swept by the Milwaukee Brewers in the postseason.
Ohtani admitted he was not satisfied with how things shaped up on the pitching side. He plans to review his treatment and training programs before next season. Friedman noted that Ohtani's offensive slump impacted the team during their early playoff exit.
Looking Ahead to Next Year
Managing Ohtani's two-way status presents a new challenge for the Dodgers. Friedman explained that the team has no prior experience or similar situations to learn from regarding this workload. They plan to be very deliberate in figuring out the best way to handle him.
Friedman also confirmed that there will be no changes to manager Dave Roberts' coaching staff. The front office will now focus on roster decisions, pending free agencies, and managing Ohtani effectively for the long season.
