Managing physical issues
Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is getting ready for a National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves that begins Saturday. Ohtani called the past few days very productive and believes his swing is in a better place.
However, Ohtani will not be fully healthy for the postseason. The left knee and right bicep ailments that compromised him throughout the summer will linger into the fall. Ohtani said through an interpreter that it is something he is just going to have to manage.
Return to the field
Knee and bicep injuries sent Ohtani to the injured list in early September after a 14-game stretch during which he compiled seven hits and 22 strikeouts. He returned for five regular-season games and showed mixed results. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted that Shohei is not 100 percent, but he is going to be in the lineup.
Roberts added that most players performing now are not 100 percent. Despite being compromised for much of the past three months, Ohtani finished the year batting .275/.377/.512 with 30 home runs and 11 stolen bases. He went 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA in 14 starts on the mound, though he did not pitch past July 3.
