Sanders Named Starter Against Saints
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has cleared the concussion protocol ahead of Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints. Despite passing the protocol, Watson remains listed as questionable for the contest.
Browns head coach Todd Monken confirmed on Friday that Shedeur Sanders will start at quarterback against New Orleans. It is not clear whether Watson will act as the team's backup on Sunday. That role could belong to Watson, or it might fall to Dillon Gabriel or Taylen Green.
Practice Preparation and Season Stats
Sanders took all the starting reps in practice this week. He took over the main workload after Watson self reported concussion symptoms on Tuesday morning and entered the protocol.
Sanders has seen limited playing time during the current season. He has attempted just three passes this year during spot appearances across two games. Taking all the starting practice reps this week gives him full preparation for Sunday.
Looking Back at Rookie Campaign
Sanders gained starting experience during his rookie season last year. He made seven starts for Cleveland and finished with a 3-4 record in those games.
In those seven starts, Sanders completed 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards. He threw seven touchdowns along with ten interceptions. Cleveland now hands him the starting job for his first start of this season.
Cleveland's Upcoming Schedule
The Browns currently hold a 5-3 record on the season. They are aiming for a positive result against New Orleans to build on their current record.
Following Sunday's game against the Saints, Cleveland will return home to host the Houston Texans in Week 10. After that home matchup against Houston, the team will enter their bye week.
