Darnold Suffers Strange Injury
The Seattle Seahawks are dealing with an unusual situation at the quarterback position. Sam Darnold suffered an injury early in Wednesday's season opening 13-10 win against the New England Patriots. The team has described the issue as a "very unique soft tissue" injury.
While the team called it a "short term injury" that is not expected to sideline him long term, there is no firm timeline for his return. The Seahawks released a statement on Monday clarifying that Darnold's hip joint is unaffected. The injury is actually located in the area of his right glute.
Darnold went down on the fifth play of the game when his right knee hit the turf while being sacked from behind. He hobbled off the field and limped into the locker room. He was eventually taken to Harborview Medical Center for testing and stayed overnight because of the high level of discomfort he felt.
Drew Lock to Start
With Darnold expected to miss the Week 2 game against the Arizona Cardinals, backup quarterback Drew Lock is preparing to step in. Lock took over during the game against the Patriots and helped lead the team to a narrow victory. This will be his first start since the 2024 season.
The Seahawks have not brought in any other quarterbacks for tryouts. Jalen Milroe, who was a third round draft pick in 2025, remains the third quarterback on the depth chart. Milroe spent most of his rookie season as a healthy scratch.
Darnold was spotted at the team headquarters on Monday. However, he did not participate in the warmup period of practice, which was the only part open to the media. After the upcoming game against Arizona, the Seahawks will face a tough stretch. They visit the Washington Commanders in Week 3, then host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 4, and play the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5.
