Nelson Needs Knee Surgery After Recent Trade

New Seattle Seahawks left guard Quenton Nelson will miss Sunday's home game against the Arizona Cardinals. Nelson requires a minor procedure to clean out cartilage in his knee, head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed on Friday. He will be evaluated on a week to week basis and will not go on injured reserve.

Seattle acquired Nelson from the Indianapolis Colts last week for a 2027 third round pick and a 2028 fifth round pick. He played every offensive snap in Monday's loss to the Chicago Bears, but the knee issue was aggravated. Macdonald explained that everyone agreed it was best to fix the issue now.

With Nelson sidelined, Grey Zabel moves back to left guard. Anthony Bradford returns to the starting lineup at right guard.

Darnold Out as Drew Lock Steps Up at Quarterback

Starting quarterback Sam Darnold is also out for Sunday. Darnold suffered a cracked rib early in Monday's match and injured his quad late in the game. He will not go on injured reserve either.

Drew Lock takes over as the starting quarterback despite dealing with a right elbow injury. Lock managed the offense in the first two games of the season, which included a 31-7 victory against the Cardinals in Week 2. The Seahawks managed Lock's practice work this week as a precaution.

Seattle also prepared backup Jalen Milroe to be ready if needed. The team signed former United Football League MVP Adrian Martinez to their practice squad for additional quarterback depth.

Multiple Starters Out Across Defense and Offense

The Seahawks enter the matchup against Arizona missing four other regular starters. Left tackle Charles Cross and outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu are both out with ankle injuries. Receiver Rashid Shaheed is missing due to a knee injury.

Defensive tackle Leonard Williams is ruled out because of a stinger. Backup defensive tackle Brandon Pili also misses out with a back injury, while backup linebacker Connor O'Toole is listed as questionable with a foot problem. Josh Jones will fill in for Cross at left tackle again.

The Seahawks hold a 4-4 record as they host the 3-5 Cardinals at Lumen Field.
