The Australia Disaster
Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay wants to forget his team's opening game of the season. The Rams suffered a heavy 27-7 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia.
The Rams entered the season as the betting favorites to win the Super Bowl. However, they looked flat throughout the match, raising questions about their preparation.
The Rams chose to fly into Melbourne just one day before the game. In contrast, the 49ers arrived a week early to prepare. While McVay and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan both downplayed the travel plans after the game, the result on the pitch spoke for itself.
McVay Wants to Forget
McVay made it clear he is not eager to return to Australia. He told reporters that he hopes they never play there again. He quickly added that his comments were not because of the atmosphere, which he called great, but because he wants to avoid his words being taken out of context.
He compared his mindset to the movie Men in Black. He explained that he wants to pretend he does not remember what happened because it feels like it was so long ago.
Despite McVay's wishes, another trip to Australia is highly likely in the future. The NFL has a multiyear agreement to play games there. Additionally, the Rams are one of four teams, alongside the Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, and Las Vegas Raiders, that hold marketing rights in Australia.
