Macdonald backs Darnold despite turnover troubles

Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald confirmed that Sam Darnold remains his starting quarterback. Darnold has thrown seven interceptions across his last four games. The Seahawks lost 17-14 to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night, where Darnold threw interceptions in both the fourth quarter and overtime.

This followed a defeat against the San Francisco 49ers where he threw two interceptions. These back to back losses leave the reigning Super Bowl champions with a 3-3 record. Macdonald told Seattle Sports 710 AM that he is not considering a change under center, stating that the team has faith in Darnold and believes he is part of the solution.

Offensive struggles go beyond the quarterback

Darnold ranks 26th in Total QBR at 43.8 since Week 3, when he returned from a glute injury suffered on the fifth play of the season opener. Backup Drew Lock filled in during the first two weeks with an 84.7 QBR and zero turnovers. Still, Seattle has broader issues on offense.

The Seahawks have committed five other turnovers via fumbles, including one by wide receiver Rashid Shaheed on Thursday night. Darnold was also sacked five times in each of his last two games. Meanwhile, the running attack has struggled without top options Jadarian Price, a rookie first round pick with a chest injury, and Zach Charbonnet, who has a knee injury.

Roster updates ahead of Week 7

Help could arrive soon for the offensive line. Right guard Anthony Bradford has missed the last five games on injured reserve with a hip and knee injury, but Macdonald said he has a really good chance to play in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Price must miss at least one more game while on injured reserve, but Macdonald noted he is doing great and should return after the Chiefs game. Charbonnet has been practicing since October 1 and must be activated off the physically unable to perform list by next Thursday.
