Missed Chances in the First Half
Scott Parker is still waiting for his first win as West Ham boss after suffering a 2-1 defeat at a spirited Blackburn Rovers. It was a painful return to East Lancashire for the former Burnley boss whose side dominated possession but ultimately paid for profligacy.
Despite West Ham having plenty of early possession, the hosts created the first real chance in the 16th minute. Jayden Fevrier sent in a near-post cross that Andri Gudjohnsen directed just wide. West Ham replied moments later when Ezra Mayers put in a low cross, but Joël Piroe could not reach it.
Konstantinos Mavropanos nearly scored right after the interval. He met Arne Engels' corner with a towering header that went just wide of the post. Jarrod Bowen then hit the woodwork with a deft header, and Engels fired a long-range shot just past the target.
Blackburn Takes Control After the Break
Blackburn made West Ham pay for those missed opportunities in the 54th minute. Fevrier broke down the right wing and delivered a pinpoint cross for Gudjohnsen. The striker dived to head in his 10th league goal of the season from six yards out.
West Ham continued to dominate possession, but Rovers defended comfortably. The hosts doubled their advantage 19 minutes from the end. Former Hammer Dapo Afolayan found space on the edge of the area and rifled a left-foot drive into the bottom right corner.
Late Drama Falls Short
The visitors grabbed a lifeline with eight minutes remaining. A pass from Taty Castellanos reached Piroe 12 yards out. He controlled the ball before blasting a shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-1.
West Ham pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages. Substitute Tomás Soucek missed a glorious chance deep into injury time when he headed straight at goalkeeper Balazs Toth from close range.
The result marked West Ham's first away defeat of the campaign. Meanwhile, Blackburn successfully ended their two-game losing streak to move within three points of the playoff spots.
