The Derby Controversy
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has called for VAR to be scrapped. This comes after a controversial goal from Erling Haaland decided the Manchester derby.
Haaland scored in the 60th minute, turning in a cross from Josko Gvardiol at the far post. The goal was initially disallowed for offside but was awarded after a VAR check. This goal proved to be the winner as City, who had Phil Foden sent off midway through the first half, won 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Pro Ref has since contacted Manchester United to admit an error of judgment. The Premier League Match Centre originally claimed that Haaland was onside and that Enzo Fernández did not play the ball while offside. However, Pro Ref later stated that the VAR did not recognise the impact of Fernández's position and should have recommended an on field review.
Schmeichel's Frustration
Schmeichel, who played 292 matches for Manchester United, believes the technology is ruining the sport. He explained that VAR is interfering with football and has not made things better since its introduction in the 2019 to 2020 season.
The former goalkeeper said during his punditry duties that he wishes the system could be scrapped. He noted that VAR and referees have become the most important people in football, which sucks the energy out of the game. He added that fans and players cannot even celebrate goals immediately anymore because of the constant reviews.
Former United defender Gary Neville also expressed his confusion. He said he needs the offside law explained to him and believes referees will recognise they got this decision wrong.
