An embarrassing display

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Sauce Gardner looked back at Sunday's victory over the Commanders in London and gave a harsh verdict on his own performance. He admitted that he gave his team an embarrassing effort on certain plays and promised that it will not happen again.

Several video clips of his lack of pursuit spread across social media, leaving the player mortified. Gardner stated that his effort was simply not there on multiple plays, adding that this is not what he stands for as a person and a player.

The viral moments

One major talking point was an 87-yard catch and run by Commanders receiver Antonio Williams in the third quarter. Although Gardner was not originally responsible for covering Williams on the play, he slowed down and appeared to jog while safety Cam Bynum and defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore chased the runner downfield.

That touchdown was eventually called back due to a penalty, but watching the footage later still made the cornerback cringe. He mentioned that seeing his defensive teammates sprinting past him while he was loafing around was crazy and completely unacceptable.

Moving past the mistakes

Gardner admitted that he saw a flag thrown for an illegal shift before the catch and mistakenly assumed the penalty would favor his team. Even so, he acknowledged that this was no excuse because referees can always pick up a flag, meaning he must run to the ball no matter what.

Aside from the effort issue, the defender also gave up two big plays in coverage, including a 47-yard touchdown to Treylon Burks and a 48-yard completion to Dyami Brown. Even with those defensive struggles, Gardner emphasized that lack of effort was his main concern, noting that effort is not really a coachable trait and he is ready to get back to practice to fix his habits.
