Darnold back on the practice field
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is closing in on a return to the starting lineup. He returned to practice on Wednesday on a limited basis. This comes after he missed most of the first two games of the season due to a glute injury.
The injury happened on the fifth play of the season opener. It was serious enough that Darnold spent the night at Harborview Medical Center. The quarterback admitted he feared for his career before a CT scan showed the injury was not season ending.
Darnold said the hospital stay gave him a new perspective on life after seeing what other patients were dealing with. "I'm really striving for that," Darnold said on Thursday about playing this weekend. He added that he is taking it day by day.
Lock steps up in relief
While Darnold was recovering, backup quarterback Drew Lock did an excellent job leading the offense. Lock helped the Seahawks secure a 13-10 win against the New England Patriots, throwing for 187 yards and one touchdown. The Seahawks defense also helped in that game, intercepting Drake Maye three times.
Lock followed that up with a strong performance in a 31-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. He completed nearly 73 percent of his passes across his appearances, throwing four touchdowns with no turnovers.
Darnold praised his teammate, calling Lock a baller. He said nobody in the building was surprised by how well Lock played.
Decision expected on Friday
Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said that Darnold has progressed much faster than expected. The team will likely make a final decision on Friday about whether Darnold will start this weekend.
Darnold noted that he felt some soreness during his return to practice on Wednesday but felt really good overall. He wants to make sure he has full confidence in his body before he steps back onto the field. He wants to be able to slide and run without worrying about his hip.
The Seahawks are preparing to travel to Maryland to face the Washington Commanders, who have zero wins and two losses this season.
