Darnold Sidelined With Quad and Rib Injuries

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold will not play in Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The Super Bowl winning quarterback is dealing with a quad injury and a cracked rib. He is also in danger of missing the Week 10 match against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Darnold suffered the cracked rib on the second play of Monday night's loss to the Chicago Bears. He continued playing through the pain before injuring his quad later in that match. While the quad injury officially ruled him out for Sunday, his damaged rib was also a factor in the decision.

Rest Strategy Before Divisional Battle

Darnold might try to return for the Raiders game in Las Vegas next week. However, the Seahawks have a scheduled bye the week after that. Sitting out the next two games would allow Darnold three full weeks to recover.

That extra rest would prepare him for a major Week 12 divisional game against the San Francisco 49ers. Darnold has faced multiple injury problems this season. He missed Seattle's Week 2 victory over Arizona after sustaining a glute and hip injury during the opening week against the New England Patriots.

Drew Lock Takes the Reins

Drew Lock will start at quarterback against the Cardinals on Sunday. The Seahawks offense has performed well with Lock on the field. In the Week 2 win against Arizona, Lock completed 73.1 percent of his passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns.

Lock is dealing with his own right elbow injury. The issue kept him inactive for the past two games and limited his throwing routines. He was listed as a limited participant in Friday's practice. In fact, he has been listed as limited on all 12 injury reports since Week 6 began.

Backup Plans and Precautionary Measures

Head coach Mike Macdonald explained on Friday that managing Lock's practice reps was more precautionary than anything else. Lock will lead the team despite his elbow concerns.

Seattle has further contingency plans ready. Macdonald noted last week that third string quarterback Jalen Milroe must prepare to play if needed against Arizona. Milroe has not appeared in a regular season game since Week 5 of last year.
