Staley Responds To Criticism
New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley spoke to reporters on Thursday to address comments made by analyst Troy Aikman. During the 45-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football, Aikman suggested that Staley did not have any answers for the Falcons offense.
Aikman pointed out that the Saints were missing key defensive players due to injuries, including linebacker Kaden Elliss and edge rushers Carl Granderson and Anfernee Jennings. He stated that the team lacked a star defender to erase mistakes. Staley admitted he heard the remarks but stated he had no idea what the analyst was talking about, adding that the comments bothered him because they were not true.
Looking Back At The Match
The Saints entered the game already dealing with player absences. Things got worse quickly when Bijan Robinson broke away for a 59-yard run just three plays into the match. Staley called that early play a shock to everybody, noting the team had not allowed runs like that earlier in the season.
Staley defended his players, stating that the defense played well for the next three possessions before a fourth down penalty led to another touchdown. While acknowledging that the team lost its rhythm and played poorly in the second half, Staley pushed back against claims that the players lacked effort, explaining that the mistakes were mainly down to assignment and technique issues.
