Eyeing the Olympic Torch

Former NBA star Russell Westbrook has set a new goal after retiring from basketball. The Olympic gold medalist wants to carry the torch when his hometown of Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Games.

Westbrook spoke on Friday after receiving an honor from the Los Angeles City Council for his community service work. He publicly announced his ambition to be part of the official presentation for the 2028 Olympics by carrying the torch.

To make this happen, Westbrook has challenged the staff at his Why Not Foundation to grow their charity efforts. He explained that positioning himself to carry the torch means being active in many local areas. He plans to focus on technology, energy, education, health care, and mental health.

Deep Roots in Los Angeles

Westbrook has strong connections to the city. He went to Leuzinger High School and UCLA before playing for both the Lakers and Clippers during his professional career. Los Angeles city councilwoman Heather Hutt praised him as a humanitarian for funding local schools, athletic facilities, and community projects.

Westbrook mentioned that everything he does in business or sports centers on his hometown. He stated that his court was Los Angeles while he played, but spending time giving back to the local people is far more important to him now.

Surprise Retirement After Great Career

Westbrook retired in August at 37 years old, finishing an 18 season career in the NBA. He ended his career as the all time leader in triple doubles, earning nine All Star selections and the 2017 MVP award.

Last season, he recorded 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game with the Sacramento Kings. His choice to walk away surprised many people because he was still playing well.

His former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Kevin Durant expressed sadness over the news. Durant said he thought Westbrook had five or six more years left in him and congratulated him on an iconic career. Westbrook hopes to enter the Basketball Hall of Fame soon, but his main focus remains helping Los Angeles.
