Keane Slams City
Former Manchester United legend Roy Keane has pulled no punches regarding the recent ruling against Manchester City. The Premier League found the club guilty of breaching more than 100 financial regulations. Keane stated that if he had played for the club during that period, he would throw his medals away.
Speaking to ITV Sport, Keane said that if he was a player, he would be 100 percent sticking those medals in the bin. He explained that it is cheating. He added that while they won their trophies on the pitch, cheating was going on in the background. He believes the club knew their actions would hurt many people but they went ahead anyway.
Massive Financial Breaches
The Premier League confirmed that Manchester City inflated their commercial revenue by 830 million pounds, which is about 1.08 billion dollars, between 2009 and 2018. Premier League CEO Richard Masters stated that the club systematically broke the league rules for nearly ten years.
During this specific nine year period, Manchester City enjoyed massive success on the pitch. They won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and three League Cups. Now, those achievements are clouded by the massive financial ruling. Critics like Keane believe these titles are tainted because of the off field rules that were broken.
Club Denies Accusations
Manchester City has strongly denied any wrongdoing. The club expressed surprise at the ruling and is preparing to fight back against the decision. They have until Friday, October 2 to appeal the verdict.
In a video sent to club staff, Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano defended the club. He called the outcome a Premier League conspiracy theory. Soriano argued that the entire case against them is built on a single false accusation. He stated that the accusation claims the owner's personal money was secretly funneled into the club through sponsors in Abu Dhabi.
