A Historic Night for Jalon Daniels
Jalon Daniels has made history in the NFL. The undrafted rookie quarterback stepped up on a short week to lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to their first win of the season, beating the Dallas Cowboys 24-16 on Thursday night at AT&T Stadium. Tampa Bay had started the year with four straight losses.
Daniels was playing in place of injured starter Baker Mayfield, who is out for at least three weeks with a dislocated thumb on his throwing hand. The rookie became the first undrafted rookie quarterback since 1967 to win a game for a team that started the season winless.
"I mean, it means everything," Daniels said after the game. The young quarterback completed 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown, while also adding 23 yards on the ground.
Strong Team Support and Big Plays
The rookie quarterback had plenty of help on Thursday night. Running back Bucky Irving rushed for a career high 165 yards and scored two touchdowns, one on the ground and one through the air. Wide receiver Emeka Egbuka also scored a rushing touchdown and caught six passes to lead the team.
The Buccaneers found their rhythm in the second quarter when Daniels went a perfect eight for eight on a drive, ending with a 5 yard touchdown pass to Irving. In the third quarter, Daniels threw a 64 yard pass to Tez Johnson, helping the team score 17 points in that quarter.
Head coach Todd Bowles handed game balls to both Daniels and Irving in the locker room after the game. Daniels had already proven his ability to rise up the depth chart, having beaten out veteran Jake Browning in the preseason to become the backup quarterback.
