A Surprise Announcement in Texas
President Donald Trump announced Wednesday night that he would award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Roger Clemens. Speaking at a rally in San Antonio, Trump called the seven-time Cy Young winner maybe the greatest pitcher of all time. The surprise revelation came near the end of a speech that lasted more than 100 minutes.
Clemens was attending the event and joined the president on stage. The retired right-hander told the crowd that he was stunned by the news. He added that the honor supersedes anything he achieved during his playing career.
The Hall of Fame Debate
During the event, Trump renewed his calls for Clemens to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Clemens, known as The Rocket, played for 24 years with teams including the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros.
Despite his long career and numerous accolades, Clemens has not yet entered the Hall of Fame. Suspensions regarding the use of steroids during his career led baseball writers to repeatedly reject his bids for induction.
Previous Recipients of the Honor
Trump noted that the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Medal of Honor are the highest awards bestowed upon anyone. He stated that the medal is a big step up from the Hall of Fame.
During his time in the White House, Trump has given the medal to several other sports figures. Past athletic recipients include golfing legend Tiger Woods, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, and famed Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.
