A tough summer decision
Barcelona midfielder Rodri has revealed that he called Jose Mourinho this summer after making the difficult decision to reject Real Madrid. The 30 year old Spain international joined Barcelona from Manchester City in a deal worth an initial 60 million euros.
He spent seven years in England before returning to Spain. Both Spanish giants wanted him, which made his summer break very busy. Rodri said he had to analyse many things and make a big decision between two of the best clubs in the world. He was eventually convinced by Barcelona sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick.
Respect for Mourinho
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho wanted Rodri at the club and explained what the midfielder would bring to the team. Rodri chose Barcelona instead, but he felt it was important to call Mourinho directly to thank him for his interest.
Rodri said that saying no to Madrid is not easy, especially because their behaviour towards him was exemplary. He called Mourinho a great coach who has proved his quality over many years. He added that Real Madrid will be a tough rival in the league this season.
Strong start under Flick
Rodri has settled quickly at Barcelona. Hansi Flick's side have won all six of their opening matches, including five in LaLiga and one in the Champions League, scoring 26 goals.
Barcelona want Rodri to bring his experience and leadership to a relatively young squad. The midfielder explained that Flick wants the team to improve day by day and never believe they have reached their limit. The club hopes this mentality will help them end their 11 year wait to win the Champions League.
