Early lead for Strasbourg
Gio Reyna continued his impressive form on Saturday, scoring for Strasbourg in their French Ligue 1 match against Paris Saint Germain.
The 23 year old midfielder broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with a low shot. The ball took a slight deflection on its way past Matvei Safonov in the PSG goal to give the home team a 1-0 lead at halftime.
It was Reyna's seventh league appearance for Strasbourg after joining from German club Borussia Mönchengladbach in the offseason. He previously scored in a 6-2 win at Troyes last month. The midfielder also started four games and provided two assists for the United States during the recent international break.
PSG turn the match around
PSG manager Luis Enrique had an upcoming Champions League fixture against Barcelona in mind. He started with key players Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi on the bench.
Those substitutes eventually made a big impact after coming on. Dembélé fired a penalty wide in the 72nd minute after Pape Demba Diop was penalized for hand ball. However, Ukraine defender Illya Zabarnyi equalized five minutes later.
Dembélé then scored in the 85th minute, and Doué added another goal in stoppage time to wrap up a 3-1 victory for PSG.
Positives despite recent slump
Strasbourg have now lost three straight matches, falling to 12th place in Ligue 1. Despite the result, Reyna remains confident about the team's direction.
He noted after the match that if Strasbourg play against other league opponents with the same standard, they will win many games this season. He added that the squad gave everything to keep PSG quiet for the first 70 minutes.
