New Date Set For Europa League Match
UEFA has officially moved the upcoming Europa League fixture between Rennes and Olympiakos. The match was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 5. European football's governing body confirmed that the game will now be played a day earlier, on Wednesday next week.
The decision comes after French public authorities contacted UEFA directly to express security concerns. Officials stated that routine security around the stadium in Rennes could not be assured on Thursday due to civil unrest.
Reasons Behind The French Strikes
The main reason for the schedule change is a general strike planned for November 5. Trade unions across France are calling on workers to take part in the nationwide action.
The widespread public demonstrations initially started with students raising concerns about conditions in their schools. However, the movement quickly expanded across the country, with citizens taking to the streets to protest cost of living issues.
With major protests expected, local police forces and public authorities will spend the day managing planned marches. Because of these demands on law enforcement, safety resources cannot be provided for the match.
Kickoff Timing and European Clash Avoided
Rennes will now host Greek club Olympiakos on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. local time, which translates to 1530 GMT.
By choosing an afternoon kickoff on Wednesday, UEFA has ensured that the game does not overlap with evening European matches. The 4:30 p.m. start time avoids a direct schedule clash with two Champions League fixtures scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Central European Time, or 1745 GMT.
Those evening Champions League matches will see Fenerbahçe play Liverpool and AEK Athens take on Real Madrid.
Domestic Matches Also Affected
The ongoing unrest in France is impacting domestic football fixtures as well as European matches. Ligue 1 has already been forced to move games that were originally set for this Saturday.
Police officers and public authorities are busy dealing with planned marches and protests over the weekend. As a result, French domestic league matches had to be rescheduled to ensure proper security coverage across the country.
