Threat to Resign

The chair of the Independent Football Regulator, David Kogan, has stated he will quit his post if there is any political interference in future investigations involving Manchester City. An independent commission previously found the club guilty of intending to circumvent Premier League financial rules over nine seasons. City have appealed the verdict, but the regulator holds powers that could force owners to divest from clubs in extreme cases.

Diplomatic Concerns and Independence

Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently mentioned he would be worried if City owners left following the verdict, highlighting potential impacts on UK and UAE diplomatic and trade relations. Kogan spoke at the launch of the regulator report in Manchester to clarify his stance on operational independence. He stated that his body is bound strictly by the task of regulating football clubs and that any political meddling will lead to his immediate resignation. He also noted that no pressure has been applied so far.

Scrutiny and Costs

Kogan faced questions regarding his past donations to the Labour Party and an inquiry involving Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, though the inquiry accepted he was unaware of procedural deviations. Shadow Culture Minister Louie French criticized the appointment. Kogan dismissed these concerns as ludicrous. The regulator report also pointed out that Premier League administrative costs for legal cases rose sharply from forty five million pounds in 2015 to 212 million pounds for 2024 and 2025.
