Quick Exit for Rafaela
Boston Red Sox center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela had a very short return to action on Wednesday. After missing games since September 3 with a right quad strain, Rafaela was activated from the injured list. Unfortunately, his return lasted only until the third inning against the Cleveland Guardians.
The outfielder left the game early after experiencing tightness in his right hamstring. The injury happened during the second inning when he hit a single off the Green Monster. He pulled up lame at the first base bag.
Trying to Play Through the Pain
After reaching first base, Rafaela was visited by manager Chad Tracy and a team trainer. He attempted to stay in the game and even jogged a bit down the right field foul line to test his leg.
He initially went back out to his position in center field for the top of the third inning. However, he quickly walked off the field and was replaced by Jarren Duran. Before his exit, Rafaela showed his defensive skills by making a diving catch to rob Steven Kwan on the third pitch of the game. He handled all three putouts in the first inning.
Impact on the Red Sox
Rafaela was having a strong season before this latest setback. He entered Wednesday's game batting .284 with 16 home runs and 70 RBIs. He is also known for his defense, having won his first Gold Glove last season.
To make room for Rafaela on the roster before the game, the Red Sox optioned infielder and outfielder Nate Eaton to Triple A Worcester. The team must now wait to see how long Rafaela will be out with this new hamstring issue.
