Big Boost for Boston Offense
The Boston Red Sox have welcomed back first baseman Willson Contreras. The team activated him from the 10-day injured list on Sunday, just in time for him to start and bat cleanup in the series finale against the Kansas City Royals.
The 34-year-old has been out of action since August 31 due to a strained left hamstring. His return is a massive addition for Boston. Contreras leads the team this season with a career-best 26 home runs and 79 runs batted in. He also carries a solid .274 batting average into his return.
Roster Changes and Rehab
Before returning to the major league roster, Contreras spent a brief time with Double-A Portland to regain his rhythm. He played two rehab games there, going 2 for 7 with two runs batted in.
Boston interim manager Chad Tracy spoke highly of Contreras on Friday, calling him an important piece to the offense. Tracy described him as being like the aircraft carrier in the middle of the lineup. He added that inserting that bat is very important when Contreras is playing well.
However, the news was not entirely positive for Boston. The Red Sox had to place infielder Anthony Seigler on the 10-day injured list. Seigler is dealing with right wrist inflammation. He picked up the injury during a swing in Saturday's 5-1 victory over the Royals.
