Tough Night at the Plate

Tampa Bay struggled to make contact against Cleveland during Game 3 of the American League Championship Series. The Rays suffered a 3-2 defeat on Thursday, dropping them into a 2-1 deficit in the best-of-seven series. Junior Caminero had a hard time at the plate, striking out four times as part of a 13-strikeout night for the team.

Unusual Strikeout Numbers

The high number of whiffs surprised a team known for avoiding strikeouts. Tampa Bay batters registered a major league-low 1,145 strikeouts during the regular season. In fact, the Rays struck out 13 times in a single game only once before this match, back on March 30 against Milwaukee.

Chandler Simpson, who hit a two run triple for the Rays, praised the opponent after the match. He called it good pitching that mixed things up and kept everything over the plate. Simpson added that the series is a tight battle between similar teams.

Looking Ahead to the Next Match

The offense managed only three hits and went 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position. Their postseason record with runners in scoring position now stands at 6 for 35 across six playoff games. In the eighth inning with a runner on third, Cleveland closer Cade struck out Yandy Diaz on a 98 mph fastball after a ten-pitch battle.

Díaz noted through an interpreter that Cade is one of the best closers in the league for a reason, and got the better hand that day. Díaz also mentioned that the swings have been decent and the team just needs to put the ball in play.

Caminero admitted he did not want to strike out four times. Speaking through an interpreter, he promised to make adjustments for the next game, plain and simple.
