Ravens Act Fast After Quarterback Injuries

The Baltimore Ravens are finalizing a trade to bring quarterback Jacoby Brissett from the Arizona Cardinals. The deal is expected to be completed this weekend.

Baltimore needed urgent help after starter Lamar Jackson suffered a thumb injury that requires surgery and could end his season. Backup Tyler Snoop Huntley also suffered a season ending turf toe injury. Undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano will start Thursday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Ravens currently sit at 4-4 and are in last place in the AFC North.

Brissett Moves On From Arizona

Brissett asked for a trade on Monday after Arizona head coach Mike LaFleur told him he was being benched. The Cardinals named Gardner Minshew II as their new starter, with rookie Carson Beck moving into the backup spot.

Brissett had started 20 straight games for Arizona going back to Week 6 of last season. He was taken out late in the third quarter of Sunday during a 33-30 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys. Trade discussions between the two teams started right after that game and picked up speed on Tuesday afternoon.

Brissett could make his first start for Baltimore in Week 10 when they host the Los Angeles Chargers.

A Look at the Numbers

During his time in Arizona, the Cardinals went 3-5 this season and 1-11 last season with Brissett starting. Over those 20 games, he ranked first in dropbacks, completions, and attempts. He also ranked third in passing first downs and fifth in passing yards.

However, he faced heavy pressure behind the offensive line. Brissett was sacked 62 times over that stretch, which tied for the most in the NFL. He was hit 241 times, which was the highest mark in the league.

The move reunites Brissett with Ravens quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork. The two worked together in Arizona last season and with the Cleveland Browns in 2022.

Contract History

Brissett made news during the offseason when he held out for a reworked contract. He missed OTAs and held in during mandatory minicamp after replacing Kyler Murray last season.

He ended up getting 15.5 million dollars guaranteed for this season. That replaced the final year of a two year deal that originally offered 4.88 million dollars in base salary with 1.5 million dollars guaranteed.
