A Wild Finish in Rio
The Baltimore Ravens secured a dramatic 34-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. The win came down to the final seconds after a late kickoff decision by the Cowboys backfired.
With only seven seconds remaining, Dallas tied the game at 31-31 with a 23-yard field goal from Brandon Aubrey. Instead of trying a short kickoff, the Cowboys decided to kick the ball into the end zone for a touchback. This decision gave the Ravens the ball at their own 35-yard line with seven seconds on the clock.
Ravens coach Jesse Minter admitted that any less than seven seconds would have made their final play very difficult. But with seven seconds left, they were ready to take a shot.
Jackson and Flowers Deliver
Lamar Jackson took the snap and completed a 27-yard pass to wide receiver Zay Flowers. Jackson immediately called a timeout with just one second remaining on the clock.
Jackson was highly efficient in the final quarter, completing six of his seven passes for 72 yards. Speaking about the pass to Flowers, Jackson said his receiver ran a great route and he just had to deliver the ball.
The Cowboys were playing with an injured secondary. Reddy Steward was playing in the slot because of injuries to Jalen Thompson, while Caelen Carson played cornerback with Shavon Revel out due to a knee injury. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said they wanted to play soft and force a short throw, but the Ravens found the space they needed.
Redemption for Tyler Loop
With one second left, kicker Tyler Loop stepped up and drilled a 56-yard field goal to win the game. It was a massive moment of redemption for the second-year kicker.
In the final game of last season, Loop missed a 44-yard field goal against the Steelers, which kept Baltimore out of the playoffs. This time, his kick was perfect. Loop celebrated the winning kick by doing Cristiano Ronaldo's famous celebration before his teammates lifted him onto their shoulders.
After the game, Loop praised his teammates for standing behind him through the tough times since last season. Jackson also congratulated his kicker, telling him that his legacy starts now.
