The Mistake and the Fine
Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio has spoken out about his recent drink driving conviction, admitting he made a major mistake. The 23-year-old centre-back was fined €14,400 and had his driver's licence suspended for eight months after testing positive at a sobriety checkpoint on September 2.
Asencio described the period as a very difficult moment in his life. Just one day after his conviction, a Spanish court acquitted him of separate charges involving the recording and distribution of sexual images of a woman and a minor.
Mourinho's Warning and Player's Response
Real Madrid opened disciplinary proceedings against the player following the incident. Manager José Mourinho reminded Asencio that being a Madrid player is a full-time responsibility, lasting 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 12 months a year.
Asencio agreed with his manager's words. He admitted he made a mistake and apologized, stating that such behavior cannot happen again now that he is at Real Madrid. He expressed his desire to turn the situation around and spend the rest of his career winning trophies with the club.
Injury Setback
While Asencio wants to focus on his football, he is currently unable to help the team on the pitch. The defender is sidelined until next year after undergoing surgery for a stress fracture in his right tibia on October 1.
Asencio was promoted to the first team in the summer of 2024 and played 34 matches during the 2025-26 season. He will have to wait for his return to action to prove he can put these off-field issues behind him.
