Long term future secured
Barcelona have officially confirmed that Raphinha has signed a new contract extension. This deal keeps the Brazilian international at the club until 2030. His previous agreement was set to run until 2028, but the club decided to act early to secure his future for two more years. It is a reward for his incredible start to the current season under the new management.
The player, who is 29, has undergone a major change this season. While he joined the club from Leeds United in 2022 as a right winger, he has found a new home as a central striker. This change came after Barcelona failed to sign striker Julian Alvarez and saw the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Hansi Flick decided to use Raphinha as a No. 9 during the preseason.
A successful change in position
Before the first league game against Elche in August, Flick asked the player if he was happy in the central role or if he wanted to move back to the left wing. Raphinha said he was happy to play through the middle. Since then, the results have been excellent for the Spanish side. He is currently playing alongside Anthony Gordon and Lamine Yamal in a revamped attack.
Raphinha has been in the form of his life since moving to the striker position. He has already scored 19 goals in just 13 appearances across all competitions this year. This run includes back to back hat tricks against Racing Santander and Sevilla earlier in the campaign. He only failed to score in one of the first eight games, which was against Levante. However, he still provided two assists in that 4-2 victory.
Goals continue to flow
He recently returned from an injury picked up on international duty to lead the line again. In his last two matches, he scored twice against Alaves and added another two goals in the 3-0 win over Aston Villa in the Champions League. His scoring has helped Barcelona win 13 of their first 15 games this season.
The timing of the contract news is great for the club. Barcelona are preparing for a massive game this Sunday. They will travel to face Atletico Madrid in a top of the table clash in La Liga. Raphinha will be expected to lead the attack as the team looks to maintain their strong start to the season. He has already shown he can perform in big games, having scored in the recent match against Real Madrid.
