Raphinha powers Barcelona comeback

Barcelona continued their winning run to start the LaLiga season on Saturday with a 3-1 away win over Sevilla. Brazilian forward Raphinha led the attack with another hat trick, following his midweek treble against Racing Santander.

Sevilla started brightly and took the lead through Youssouf Fofana. They looked ready to become the first side to take points off the Spanish champions this season. However, Raphinha levelled the game before half time and added two more goals in the second half. The victory makes it seven wins from seven league matches for Barca.

Luis Garcia questions Ballon d'Or shortlist

After the match, Sevilla coach Luis Garcia spoke about Raphinha and questioned his omission from the Ballon d'Or nominees. The 30 player shortlist for the top individual award in football was announced earlier this month without the Barcelona attacker.

Luis Garcia said it is a joke that Raphinha was not nominated because he is a match winner who does everything. The Sevilla boss also said he was proud of his own players, noting that Barcelona had to be at their absolute best to win the game.

Thriving in a new central role

Raphinha has now hit 12 goals in the league and 14 in all competitions this season. Coach Hansi Flick repositioned him as a number nine in the summer following the exit of Robert Lewandowski and the failed pursuit of Julian Alvarez.

The three goals came on the same day sporting director Deco confirmed that an agreement is in place for Raphinha to extend his stay until 2030. His previous contract ran until 2028. Flick described Raphinha as a leader who connects with the supporters and team mates.

Six points clear at the top

The win gives Barcelona eight straight victories in all competitions heading into the international break. Flick still pointed out areas for improvement, noting that his team gave the ball away too easily during a difficult first half.

The result leaves Barcelona six points clear at the top of LaLiga, with second placed Real Madrid facing rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday. Barcelona will return to action on Oct. 10 against Getafe.
