Finding a New Way Forward
The Los Angeles Rams recently lost wide receiver Davante Adams for six to 10 weeks due to a hamstring injury. Quarterback Matthew Stafford explained that replacing a player of that caliber requires a complete team effort. Stafford noted that you cannot simply substitute a future Hall of Famer one for one. During a 35-21 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, the team shifted its focus toward the running game. This is an area where Los Angeles has experienced inconsistent results throughout the season.
Strong Ground Attack Against Las Vegas
Led by running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, the Rams rushed for a season-high 201 yards and scored two touchdowns in the victory. Statistics showed the team had a 60.0 percent rushing success rate, which stands as the fourth highest by any team in a single game this season. Corum described the ground success as beautiful and mentioned that running the ball effectively breaks the will of the opponent. Head coach Sean McVay expressed a desire for more offensive balance following a previous loss to the Arizona Cardinals where Stafford attempted 33 passes compared to 20 rushes.
Sharing the Load in the Backfield
McVay wanted to share the load between Williams and Corum, and Sunday marked the closest the team has come to that goal. Williams played 36 offensive snaps, rushing for 99 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Corum played 29 snaps, gaining 93 yards and scoring a touchdown on 17 carries. Stafford joked that sometimes he enters the huddle and does not even know which running back is currently in the game. McVay praised the pair as nice compliments to each other, noting their different run styles create challenges for opposing defenses.
