Pressure mounts on Michael Carrick after poor Manchester United start

Manchester United are struggling under Michael Carrick after their worst start since 1986, sparking talk about potential managerial replacements.

Trouble at Old Trafford

Manchester United have made their worst start to a league season since 1986. They exited the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle last month and are closer to the Premier League relegation zone than the top four following a 1-1 draw at Leeds United. That trip to Elland Road extended United's winless run in all competitions to six games ahead of a UEFA Champions League trip to Como.

Michael Carrick said that the result against Daniel Farke's side marked a fresh start for his team. United have dismissed a manager in each of the last two seasons, however. Erik ten Hag was fired in October 2024, followed by Ruben Amorim in January 2026. With results continuing to disappoint, fans and pundits are wondering who might take over if Carrick fails to inspire a change of fortune.

Potential candidates for the job

Eddie Howe is one name on the radar. The 48-year-old is unattached after stepping down from Newcastle United in August. He is a proven Premier League manager with a track record of stability, though some question if he has the X-factor for United. Another unattached option is Antonio Conte. He is a proven winner with titles at Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli, but his abrasive style could cause friction.

Kieran McKenna is another unattached manager who knows the club well from his time as a coach at Old Trafford. While he earned promotions with Ipswich Town, his experience is limited. Fabian Hürzeler is also drawing attention for his work at Brighton and Hove Albion, building a high-energy side that competes with the best in the league.
