Red Devils Collapse In West London
Michael Carrick is under heavy pressure as Manchester United head coach after watching his team lose 2-0 away to Chelsea on Saturday. The defeat means United have now gone nine matches in all competitions without a victory.
The visitors held their own in an entertaining first half, but everything fell apart after the interval. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring five minutes into the second half. He was allowed to dribble straight through the United defence before lifting a finish over Senne Lammens.
Red Card And Penalty Seal Chelsea Win
Things got worse for United when Lisandro Martínez was sent off. The Argentine defender picked up his second yellow card three minutes and 30 seconds after his first. The VAR spotted him elbowing Wesley Fofana as a Chelsea corner came into the box. Martínez, who had previously criticized the United hierarchy after a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid on October 13, walked straight down the tunnel without speaking to Carrick.
Cole Palmer doubled the lead from the penalty spot. Lammens got two hands to the ball, but it bounced in off the post. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders tipped a late Bryan Mbeumo shot onto the crossbar during injury time to preserve his clean sheet.
Relegation Fears Grow For Manchester United
United have collected just seven points from their opening nine league games, raising genuine concerns about a relegation battle. Carrick was expected by many to lose his job after last weekend's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth, but he was given more time by the club hierarchy.
Bruno Fernandes returned to the starting lineup in west London. He missed the Bournemouth game after being dropped for criticizing Carrick's tactics following a defeat at Como. United face Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday. They have only gone ten games without a win twice in their history, during the 1961 to 1962 and 1977 to 1978 seasons.
Young Chelsea Side Ends Losing Streak
For Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, the result stopped a bad run after losing their previous two matches. Chelsea fielded a starting lineup with an average age of 23 years and 89 days. It was the youngest in the Premier League since May 2025 and their joint second youngest ever in the competition.
During a competitive first half, both Matheus Cunha and Estêvão had goals disallowed for offside. However, Chelsea dominated the second 45 minutes to secure the victory.
