More misery at Old Trafford
Michael Carrick may have overseen his final match as Manchester United head coach after a feeble Old Trafford display led to a 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth. Fans greeted the final whistle with loud boos. His position was already hanging in the balance after a poor start to the season, which was made worse by a calamitous 4-1 loss at Como on Wednesday.
Sunday, the meek loss extended United winless run to eight straight matches in all competitions. Rayan and Marcus Tavernier scored avoidable first half goals for the well drilled Cherries. Home fans displayed a banner reading standards as the players trudged off at the break, featuring club legends Roy Keane, Eric Cantona and Bryan Robson.
Tensions behind the scenes
Current captain Bruno Fernandes was dropped for the match. This came days after his public critique of Carrick approach in Italy. The head coach claimed it was a pure football decision rather than punishment, but he remained seated throughout a tepid second half.
Evanilson soon punished a wandering Senne Lammens to score the third goal. United fans expressed their fury at the Glazers and co owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe towards the end of the match. Bournemouth celebrated a third 3-0 win at Old Trafford in the last four seasons.
