Serious Questions After Tragic Collision
Spanish medical officials are asking questions about emergency protocols following the death of Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel. The 30 year old striker died on Tuesday, one day after a heavy collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a second division match.
National Police in Spain opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter. This is standard procedure for a non natural death. Investigators are expected to assess whether Owono went beyond the normal course of play during the late game collision for a high ball.
Emergency Response Under Scrutiny
Medical staff reached De Miguel 20 seconds after he collapsed on the pitch. Emergency workers brought a stretcher to the scene in under a minute. However, it remains unclear what specific medical attention he received during the five minutes he lay on the grass before being moved to an ambulance.
Elvira González, president of Spain's Association of Nurses, Emergency Medics and Caregivers, expressed concern over conflicting reports. Some media stated De Miguel received CPR on the field, while others reported it happened in the ambulance. It is also unknown if a defibrillator was used. González noted that CPR must start immediately and that using a defibrillator is essential.
Club Shareholder Demands Clarity
Tenerife largest shareholder Rayco García said he wants clear answers from the investigation. He noted that the medical team acted fast and followed existing protocols. He explained that the medical staff did not order the ambulance to enter the pitch.
García stated he wants to know if anything could have been done to prevent the tragedy. He added that he prefers to wait for the autopsy results before discussing further steps. Spanish football rules require home clubs to have a doctor on site and an ambulance equipped with life support.
Football Community Mourns Loss
The player's death shocked the football community across Europe. Teams paid tribute before Champions League matches on Tuesday, while supporters left flowers outside the Tenerife stadium.
Goalkeeper Owono offered his condolences to the family, stating these were the most difficult days of his life. De Miguel is survived by his wife and a one year old daughter. A funeral is tentatively planned for Thursday in Toledo.
