A stunning opening day turnaround
The Detroit Pistons found themselves in serious trouble midway through the third quarter on Tuesday afternoon. Trailing 72-50 after a 3-pointer from Boston player Paul George, the home side looked completely out of it in front of their fans at Little Caesars Arena. The deficit reached 22 points, but that moment completely changed the intensity for the Pistons.
Detroit went on to orchestrate the largest comeback on the first day of an NBA season in the play-by-play era, which dates back to 1997-98. It also stands as the largest come-from-behind win for Detroit against Boston over the past 30 seasons. The team used a massive 23-0 run in the final quarter to turn a 99-89 deficit into a 112-99 lead, cruising to a 121-113 victory.
Key performances spark the rally
Veteran sharpshooter Duncan Robinson played a massive role in the fourth quarter surge. He scored 15 of his 21 points during the final period, including three 3-pointers. Cade Cunningham added 8 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and finished the game with eight assists.
Jalen Duren put up 22 points and nine rebounds following a strong performance. Duren mentioned that the comeback showed the true culture of the team. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff noted that the opponent and outside noise do not matter as long as the team plays proper basketball. For Boston, Paul George scored 38 points in his debut, while Jayson Tatum finished with 13 points and 11 assists.
