Early Exit for Dillon Brooks
The Phoenix Suns suffered a tough 127-120 defeat to the Denver Nuggets on Friday night, and the loss was made even harder when forward Dillon Brooks was sent off early. Brooks was ejected from the game during the third quarter after a contact incident involving Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray.
The decision removed one of Phoenix's top performers from the floor as they tried to fight back against Denver in a tight contest.
How the Incident Happened
The key play occurred in the third quarter of the game while Brooks had the ball on offense. Brooks went up for a turnaround jumper with Murray defending him tightly.
As Brooks went through his shooting motion and fell backward, his right leg extended forward. His foot made contact directly with Murray's groin area.
The physical blow brought Murray down immediately. The Denver guard was writhing on the court in pain for a brief period. Murray eventually pulled himself back up to his feet and was able to stay in the game to finish out the matchup.
Referees Upgrade to Flagrant 2
When the play ended, the referees called an offensive foul on Brooks. However, the game officials determined that the incident needed a secondary video review to assess the severity of the contact.
After watching the replay, the officials decided to upgrade the ruling to a Flagrant 2 foul. By rule, a Flagrant 2 foul triggers an automatic ejection, forcing Brooks to leave the court immediately and head straight to the locker room.
Impact on the Phoenix Offense
Losing Brooks was a major setback for Phoenix, as he was in the middle of a strong offensive game. Before his sudden removal, Brooks had been leading the Suns in scoring throughout the contest.
At the moment of his ejection, Brooks had accumulated 22 points while shooting an efficient 9 of 12 from the floor. Phoenix ultimately fell short in their comeback attempt, dropping the game 127-120 to Denver.
