Phillies Pitcher Jesús Luzardo Sidelined With Shoulder Injury

The Philadelphia Phillies have suffered a major setback to their pitching rotation. The team announced on Tuesday that they have placed starting pitcher Jesús Luzardo on the injured list. Luzardo is dealing with left shoulder inflammation and will not be eligible to return to action until the final game of the regular season.

The 28 year old pitcher was originally scheduled to start on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves. However, he was scratched from that road game after experiencing stiffness in his left shoulder. An MRI scan later revealed that there are no serious issues with his shoulder.

Luzardo Targets Postseason Return

Despite the setback, Luzardo remains optimistic about his chances of pitching in the playoffs. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the left handed pitcher expressed confidence that he will recover in time for the postseason games.

"I can't say 100 percent I'm going to start, but that's the goal," Luzardo said. "I feel confident I can make that happen."

Luzardo has been having a huge season for the Phillies. He has put up a 14-5 record with an impressive 2.87 ERA. In his last game on September 7, which was also against the Braves, he recorded 12 strikeouts and threw the first shutout of his career. To replace Luzardo on the roster, the Phillies have recalled right handed pitcher Grant Holman from Triple A.
