Phillies Add Pitching Depth
The Philadelphia Phillies have made a move to boost their pitching staff. They claimed right handed pitcher José Urquidy off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.
The 31 year old pitcher could see action as early as Friday in the game against the New York Mets. Phillies manager Don Mattingly explained that Urquidy is expected to either start the game or come in after an opener to cover a bulk role.
Replacing Jesús Luzardo
This move comes at a time when Philadelphia desperately needs pitching help. The team recently lost All Star Jesús Luzardo to the injured list due to left shoulder inflammation. Luzardo has been a key player for the team this season, ranking in the National League's top 10 with 14 wins, a 2.87 ERA, and 221 strikeouts.
To make room for Urquidy, the Phillies transferred right handed pitcher Caleb Killian to the 60 day injured list.
What Urquidy Brings to the Mound
Mattingly noted that losing Luzardo forces the team into a bullpen game. He said that a bullpen game is "different than having a bulk guy in there that can throw 70, 75 pitches." Urquidy fits that bulk role perfectly.
Urquidy has two wins and two losses this year with a 5.28 ERA and one save. He has made one start and 10 relief appearances this season, playing for both the White Sox and Pittsburgh. His last game was on September 8, where he threw 45 pitches and allowed two runs over four innings against the Pirates.
