A Rough Season for Turner
Philadephia executive Dave Dombrowski has put shortstop Trea Turner on notice. Turner has seven years remaining on his contract, but he must fix his defense by spring training to keep his position. Dombrowski and Turner met recently at Citizens Bank Park to discuss the player's future.
Turner had a difficult year at the plate and in the field. He hit .242 with a .675 OPS and committed a league-worst 21 errors at shortstop. During the playoffs, he went 1 for 10 as the Phillies lost to the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card Series.
Improvement is Mandatory
Dombrowski stated that Turner must regain his form as at least an average fielding shortstop. From a defensive perspective, the team expects much better performance next season.
Turner acknowledged his struggles after the final playoff game. He admitted that his offensive and defensive difficulties contributed to the early exit. He stated that he has a lot of work to do during the offseason to find answers and fix his swing.
Potential Position Change
If Turner fails to improve at shortstop, a position change to the outfield remains a possibility. Turner prefers the infield, but Dombrowski noted that he is a good athlete who could adjust if necessary.
The Phillies also have other options in the infield. Bryson Stott could move to shortstop, and top minor league prospects Aidan Miller and Bryan Rincon are waiting for their opportunities.
