Historic MLS Award
Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan has made history by becoming the youngest player ever to win the MLS Player of the Month award. The teenager took home the honors for September after a series of brilliant performances.
Sullivan, who turned 17 on September 28, has been a key player for his club. He has recorded seven goals and 12 assists in 26 games for the Union this season, playing 1,675 league minutes.
Chasing Teen Records
His 19 goal contributions this season have put him in elite company. He is now tied with Alphonso Davies, who set his mark in 2018, for the second most goal contributions by a teenager in a single MLS season. He is just one behind Diego Fagundez, who had 20 in 2013.
Sullivan's form has helped the Union climb to sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Since returning from the World Cup break, the team has gone on a twelve game unbeaten streak. They have picked up 32 points in that run, which ties the MLS record for the most points by a club in any twelve game span. Sullivan started 11 of those games and got a goal or assist in eight of them.
Making Waves on the International Stage
Sullivan has also made a massive impact on the international stage with the United States national team. At just 16, he became the youngest player to start a match for the United States since Freddy Adu in 2006.
New national manager Mauricio Pochettino selected him in the starting lineup for Saturday's 4-1 friendly victory over Peru. Sullivan was one of 11 players, including seven other teenagers, who made their international debuts in that match. He followed that up by coming on as a substitute on Tuesday in a 4-2 friendly win against Chile.
What is Next for the Young Star?
After his busy international break with the national team, Sullivan will return to club action very soon.
The Union are preparing to host Real Salt Lake at Subaru Park on October 10. Fans will be watching closely to see if the young midfielder can continue his great form and help his team push even higher up the Eastern Conference table.
