Big changes for the Eagles offensive line
The Philadelphia Eagles face a major rebuild on their front line ahead of their match against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Star offensive linemen Lane Johnson and Cam Jurgens are both gone. Johnson unexpectedly retired, while Jurgens was traded to the Baltimore Ravens.
These quick changes leave Philadelphia with a much younger group up front. However, team officials are working through the financial details to keep the roster manageable.
Roster decisions and cap strategy
The Eagles plan to keep Johnson on their 53 man roster through the season rather than placing him on the retired list. Doing this helps their salary cap situation until after June 1. It also leaves a small chance open in case Johnson decides to return.
Johnson received an option bonus of 21.7 million dollars before the season. He is expected to pay back several million dollars, though the exact amount is still being discussed by the NFLPA and the league. His base salary is 1.3 million dollars. To make space due to injuries, the team cut quarterback Andy Dalton on Friday.
Roseman keeps focus on winning
In the trade with Baltimore, Philadelphia sent Jurgens and a 2027 seventh round pick to the Ravens for a 2027 fifth rounder and a 2028 second rounder. Some wondered if general manager Howie Roseman was starting a fire sale, but team insiders say that is not the case.
Roseman could even use that future second round pick to bring in immediate help this season. The team still believes it can win now with a strong defense, an experienced quarterback, and top playmakers like Saquon Barkley. Once guard Landon Dickerson returns from injured reserve, rival teams may ask about him, but Philadelphia remains focused on competing right now.
